Since the launch of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India on 1st July 2017, it has now become mandatory for all business concerns to comply with the minimum aggregate turnover threshold in order to register for GST and obtain the unique GSTIN number. Currently, this threshold is Rs. 20 lakh for other Indian states, and Rs. 10 lakh for states in the hills and the North-Eastern region of India. This threshold will be doubled, effective from 1st April 2019.
In case you fail to register for GST, you can be subjected to hefty fines and penalties up to 100% of your tax liability. You can complete your GST registration and obtain your unique GSTIN number by visiting the official GST portal. Following which, you would need to click on ‘Register Now’ and fill up all the details required in Part A of the application form.
After entering the details, you will need to verify your contact details through the OTP received on your mobile number and email. Once you do so, you will get a temporary reference number (TRN).
Now, use the TRN to fill up all the details in Part B of the application form and upload the relevant documents - PAN card, Aadhar card, address proof of business, etc. - to complete the GST registration process. Once the documents submitted by you are verified, you will get your GSTIN number and a certificate of registration.
After registering, you will be entitled to receive all GST benefits as outlined in the GST Act. There are various third-party websites with dedicated back-end support staff to help you with GST registration.
