The GST exemption limit was increased from Rs. 10 Lakh to Rs. 20 Lakh for special category states (Himachal Pradesh and North East states) in the 32nd GST Council Meeting held on 10th January 2019.
Even before the announcement, Assam had already announced the changes. The state’s Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sharma expressed that this new threshold will reduce the tax burden on numerous small businesses.
The necessary changes were made after the House passed the Assam Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2018, passed on 3rd October 2018.
The other two states that received clearance to increase this threshold included Nagaland and Meghalaya.
